I have written a couple of short stories (just for my own amusement
more than anything else). They are in the 5,000 word ballpark, so not
all that short.
Is there any place online any of you would recommend to publish them so
that I can get feedback on them from readers?
I have only just started a blog to put them up in the hope of
attracting opinions and criticism.

I assume this may be a half-useful first step, but any opinions or
ideas will be very welcome. Especially on places where readers would
offer constructive criticism.

If you're willing to read and critisise other people's stories, you
might like Critters Workshop.

Thanks for that, but unfortunately the stuff I have written will
probably not be classed as SF/Fantasy/Horror. Any other ideas welcome,
even if they are on how to get people to read then online on the blog.

There is a rec.arts.sf.written, so I imagine there is a rec.arts.written
newsgroup as well.

For that, join some blog surfing exchange sites. You'll get peoople who just
pass through, but I've gotten people who now read my blog on a semi-regular
basis.
Also webrings. Also, seek out reciprocal links wit other similar blogs.
Write the authors and say "I'll link to you if you link to me."

Ignore him. In a year and a bit I've had over 12,000 hits. I think SOME of
them are from people I don't know, and SOME of those may have actually read
bits of it.

Take a look at Forward Motion www.fmwriters.com
They have a roving crit board where you can post stuff for comment,
although it is considered polite if you crit other people's work too.
Dig around the site as there's a lot of info on getting published and
sending your work out to agents/publishers for consideration.
Also, if you want to eventually sell any of your work be very careful
about how you publish it on the web. If the blog is open to the public
then a publisher may not want to touch it. After all, why should they
spend money publishing something that anyone can read on the web for
free?

Yup. I suppose I could still rework it, but of my three thesis chapters, two
I published and one I donated to L-Space. I haven't tried to publish the
third on in print, because I'm sure enough that Loriba is correct that I
will probably never try, not without substantial structural revision and at
least doubling the word count.
